The
best thing is to look natural, but it takes makeup to look natural – Calvin
Klein
Can you recall the
first time you gave a touch of makeup to your face? According to a latest
research, the average age for girls starting to
use makeup is now 11 years old. That's three years younger than it was a decade
ago! During that age, I was busy in planning games to play with, definitely not
in picking up which color suits my lips the best. This is not really something
to be wonder at. As time flies, this is one of the changes the world has
offered us. Like it or not, that’s the fact.
Just
look at the pictures of our young girls in Facebook and you will agree on the research’s
finding. They must be around 11-14 years old but they knew better on how to do
smoky eyes! Pity me, I don’t even know how to do it until now. Is that
something good to put on makeup as early as 11?
While
it is actually good to be a fast learner, vast majority of women don’t think
this is a good thing. More than 89% of women said girls under 13s should not
wear makeup unless it was for a very infrequent special occasion. Makeup makes
women look younger and more attractive. The argument is that, what’s the need
for an 11 years old girl to look younger when they are already young?
The
finding raises concern that these girls might develop an unhealthy obsession
with their appearance. At that age, they might just apply whatever they found
attractive without knowing the ingredients and how it could affect their skins.
Besides that, they might also engage in some dangerous activities in the
process to makeup. I know a girl that shaved her eyebrow during her primary
school just because of her curiosity. What if they started to do so for makeup
purposes? Well, eyebrow pencil works best when the brow is already in a shape. This
is definitely not a good idea for a young girl!
A
survey reported that the key drivers for the drop in age were peer group
pressure at school and the desire to feel more grown-up. Reality TV shows were
also blamed for girls wanting to grow up too fast. Makeup works well because
it’s a good lie. Our bodies are programmed to perceive sexual signals from the
coloration on our faces. It tricks our brains just enough for it to be worth
the time and effort if you want to look hotter. We all need make-up at least
for a little touch-up. Yet, that doesn't mean the girls can do it as early as
11!
So,
what do you think is an acceptable age to start wearing makeup?
